Decoctions are best for the tougher parts of plants—like roots, bark, twigs, and berries. These ingredients need heat and time to release their beneficial compounds. If you’re making a blend, you can always add delicate herbs (like leaves and flowers) after turning off the heat.
Recipe:
Add herbs to a pot of water and simmer for 20–30 minutes.
Strain and store in a cool place.
A standard ratio is 20 g of dried herbs to 3 cups of water, reduced to about 2 cups after simmering.
Standard dosage:
2 cups (500 ml) per day.
Store the decoction in a covered jug in the refrigerator (or a cool place) for up to 48 hours.
